What if instead of maximizing profits for billionaires we commit to consciousness-raising?????? (reading this back and i sound insane)

The title comes from a recurring thought that I have had since the first semester of my freshman year. Much like other elite higher-education institutions in America, CMC has some brilliant students that have immense capacities for critical thinking and problem-solving. And much like other elite higher-education institutions in America, CMC (especially) has a significant portion of their student body go into finance. Whether you like it or not, the finance world is hell bent on maintaining a status quo that is incredibly oppressive and clearly unsustainable. Regrettably, I see the appeal of chasing the bag and am in constant conversation with myself about my career choices BUT, I do wonder what an America who's "best and brightest" went into, say, education would like.

I see the use of consciousness-raising in Professor Toole's paper as a particular form of education that draws people closer to realizing epistemic privilege, this sort of perception of oppressive structures that is unique to those who are oppressed under themRecalling the readings from Professor Harris and Chamallas, which illustrate how social inequality is preserved and transformed in our legal system, we can recognize the crucial role of epistemic privilege in the pursuit of a just society. We can also see it as a means of morphing individuals that are going to be increasingly unsatisfied, and interested in upending, the status quo. A critical mass of individuals who undergo this type of education would undoubtedly have transformative impacts on our society. Essentially, I see this type of consciousness-raising as a viable and effective means of revolution.

I, for one, have lost faith in the current affairs of society and think we need to try something radically different. Rather than devoting our energies to tearing down a system that seems like its destroying itself (the way Marx's account said it would), why not begin to prefigure a society that eschews domination and subjugation and cleaves to love, unity and justice (kumbaya). We can start that prefiguring through education. In building new societal structures, we would need to be hyper aware of the injustices that are currently occurring. For that reason, the people who are epistemically situated to be experts on those injustices will have to play indispensable roles in the new society's formation.

The best part is everyone has access to this epistemic privilege! So once we all unlock it we can collectively disperse to the most oppressed areas of the country and work toward raising-consciousness so we can build an egalitarian society! Obviously, my plan for societal overhaul is out of the scope of this blog post but I actually think this could be a way to enact substantial change (It's better than what Marx had in mind because we actually get to do something).

The problem is the means of this consciousness-raising. Who gets to establish the curriculum that people use to raise consciousness? How do you ensure that the consciousness-raising isn't co-opted by ideology? Who gets to raise-consciousness? I understand that its a collective endeavor but we do have to learn from somewhere/someone. How would we avoid implicit paternalism in these consciousness-raising initiatives?
